I was debating with my husband over whether or not the North pole would still be called the north pole if the poles flip...since the compass would then point to the south pole for north. SO I looked up magnetic north and the definition thereof , and to my surprise it actually explains how the north pole is actually physically the south pole currently! Meaning since the last pole shift/flip it is actually opposite of what I always thought it is??? Can someone please explain to me if this is correct how it is possible . I am now so much more confused than I already was. I have always had trouble with directions of the north/south east/west so now I need serious help! Possibly this is an incorrect statement on wikipedia? I just don't know. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Magnetic_Pole

Did anyone read this? Can you explain to me which way is right??? ~puts on her nerd glasses and lab-coat again, smirking~ ~ahem~ The Geographic North Pole of the earth is the northernmost point, speaking geographically that is. The way we perceive the Geographic poles is in relation to the equator, and the shape of the Earth. Contrary to popular belief, the Earth is not a sphere, it is what is known as an "oblong spheroid"... this means that the Earth is not perfectly rounded all around. Because of gravitational effects on the Earth, the Earth is slightly flat at the top and the bottom, and bulges at the equator. The flat top of the oblong spheroid is known as the Geographic North Pole. The flat bottom of the oblong spheroid is known as the Geographic South Pole. Who knows why we call them North and South. It makes life easier for the map-makers I suppose. ~shrug~ Magnetic North and Magnet South are a completely different ball of wax though... this is something I'm not completely familiar with. I do remember when I was in high school that magnetic North was under Canada. A long time ago they thought that there was a vast deposit of magnetic material like hematite or something under Canada, and this was why magnets would point towards it... as long as you were south of it. If you are standing on magnetic North however, your compass will spin around. If you are standing North of it, the needle will point in the geographical South direction of you towards magnetic North... if that makes any sense... I guess this is not the case now though that they say that magnetic North is moving towards Russia. ~shrug~ I have no idea. One can never tell with wikipedia if the facts are straight or not. I just did a google search and found the following article from Scholastic, a good credible educational source: www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=4616Maybe this will clear things up... Edit: Eh, I just read it. It's not perfectly clear still... but yea.

There have been many magnetic reversals. We know this because the little iron bearing molecules in rocks line up (with their little norths and souths all in agreement ) during a lava flow which solidifies and traps the minerals in the position they were aligned in. Then, 10,000 years later - another lava flow over the top of the first one and the minerals are pointing opposite directions.
Lave flows like the one the size of most of Washington state do not get "flipped over".
I don't know if there is rock evidence of a moving North - and subsequent break down of the Van Allan belts. Maybe I will chase that.

When they say that the north pole is a south-facing pole they are just saying that the magnetic field is traveling from the top of the planet down through the core to the bottom, rather than traveling from the top of the planet up into space, so the magnetic pole is actually pointing south. We call it the north pole though because it is in a northerly direction from us, as long as we are not actually standing on the north pole. Then, like lorelei said, a compass would just spin around in circles. If the magnetic poles did flip, north would still be north because that is the direction that we have assigned to it, but compasses would actually be pointing south. If that is not confusing enough let me know and I will explain it again so that it really doesn't make sense.

Please confuse me further... maybe then I will understand... ;D

Ah....at risk of being the Grinch who stole the happy thoughts about magnetic reversals - they take a lot longer than a year to finalize and during that time the Van Allan belts (that protect us from solar and space radiation) will be interrupted. As will all transmissions of micro-wave, radio-wave, satellite communications, etc etc. Visualize love but consider a piece of property you can get to that has a deep well insulated cave. Or just groove on whatever is happening. That is probably the best advice as these things can take thousands of years. Auroras will be splendid. (Remember the Terminator movie where the heroine goes to Mexico - a semi-safe place- and everyone is watching the sky? Some of these script writers do their homework.

Hmmm...caves are the really dark places with bats and cave creatures right?

Yes...although there will probably be a lot of other people and critters crowded in with you. Think solar radiation such that you cannot go outside in the sun for more than a few moments unless shielded (of course by then, the food you are eating should be in the cave as well...). And that the creatures who cannot escape the sun may begin to look...ah....unexpected as mutations get stepped up. Ummm....happy place, happy place must go to my happy place...
It wouldn't have to be a cave exactly - underground malls and parking facililties might serve. Maybe under the surface of the ocean. There....not quite love but I'm working on it.

Eh. Don't worry about it. Whatever happens will happen. If we are meant to survive, we will. If not, we won't. We're all only mortal anyhow. Eventually, all of us will meet together in the great Unknown. ~shrug~
