Sightseeing on the EdgeI am creating this thread so that people who travel somewhere or see something interesting can post photos and tell us about it. If you take a vacation somewhere and have photos you want to post we would love to see those also. They don't have to be paranormal in nature although if they are that would be great! I don't really like the name of this thread either so if somebody can think of a better one by all means let me know. I'll go first since I'm the one starting the thread.

The Rocket Rest AreaI was driving down I-65 into Alabama today when I saw a huge rocket looming up ahead of me. Naturally I had to pull over and check it out. The rocket is an old Saturn 1B Rocket which was one of the prototypes for the Apollo program. The 1B was used to test launch the Space Capsule and Lunar Lander while the larger Saturn V, which would actually take astronauts to the Moon, was being developed. After the completion of the Apollo program the 1B was used to launch crews to the Skylab space station and later on was used during the joint US-USSR Apollo Soyuz Test Project. The Saturn rockets were developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville and there are several of them on display in Alabama. The one in the rest area was erected in 1979. The other two are on display at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. If you are ever driving through Alabama and want to check it out it is located on I-65 heading south about a mile past the Tennessee state line. Unless you are totally blind you can't miss it.

I was driving up in the northeast when the trees were changing color. They are really amazing in October...especially in the Massachusetts and Connecticut area. Pennsylvania and New York have some good ones too. The fall is about the only time I actually like being up in that area.

I can't afford to travel too much... but I decided as I was on my way to work today I would take a photo of a common tourist attraction up here... after all, I have to drive past it every day anyhow... lol... This was snapped while I was doing 60 mph. I'm surprised it turned out as well as it did though... lol... I snapped it with my cell phone camera held in my left hand. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline... aka the Alyeska Pipeline.

I didn't know you lived close to the pipiline, Lorelei. That's kind of cool. I would like to see it someday just to say that I saw it. We have some big pipelines down here in Texas too. They go to the refineries down on the gulf. Lots of the bigfoot (or skunk ape as they call it down here) sightings occur near those pipelines. They like to follow them through the forests because all of the trees and plants have been cut away and they have a clear path to walk.

I believe it sky. It would make walking much more convenient for them... and no cars around to scare them. There's lots of oil in Texas too I've heard. The following info is from this website: www.alyeska-pipe.com/pipelinefacts.htmlPipeline Quick Facts The Trans Alaska Pipeline System was designed and constructed to move oil from the North Slope of Alaska to the northern most ice-free port in Valdez, Alaska. Length: 800 miles. Diameter: 48 inches. Crosses three mountain ranges and more than 30 major rivers and streams. Cost to build: $8 billion in 1977, largest privately funded construction project at that time. Construction began March 27, 1975 and was completed May 31, 1977. First oil moved through the pipeline on June 20, 1977. More than 16 billion barrels have moved through TAPS. First tanker to carry crude oil from Valdez: ARCO Juneau, August 1, 1977. Tankers loaded at Valdez: 19,625 through April 30, 2008. The mission of Alyeska’s Ship Escort Response Vessel System is to safely escort tankers through Prince William Sound.

Cross at the CrossroadsJust in time for the Christmas season. I drive by this every time I go through Effingham, illinois. It is a giant 198 foot tall metal cross that stands along the side of the interstate where 57 and 70 merge together. The cross is said to be the largest in the northern hemisphere. (some say the largest in the world but that's not true) This giant cross was erected in 2001 by the Cross Foundation, which was started by a man who had been inspired by seeing a similar giant cross down in Texas. He decided to build one in Effingham, which is sometimes called the Crossroads of America, to provide a message of hope to the 50,000 people who pass by it every day. In addition to the cross there is also a smaller display of the ten commandments that circle around the base, and a visitors center where people can watch videos showing how the cross was constructed. The cross is located just south of exit 159 where the two interstates merge together. You can't miss it...it's the only giant cross in the area.
