A British woman claims she has been touched and groped by an unseen presence at night and suspects her assailant is a perverted poltergeist. Then there is the 'scientific' version Belief and psychology often play an important role in ghostly phenomena. The biggest clue to understanding what's going on in Birch's bedroom is the fact that the gropes always occur at night, when she is either asleep, drifting off to sleep, or waking from sleep. Psychologists know that the brain is especially susceptible to hallucinations and waking dreams during these times when consciousness fades. People often have these hallucinations while waking up (called hypnopompic activity) and while falling asleep (called hypnagogic activity). These are no more real than an ordinary dream, but can cause fear and concern if the person believes that the experiences were caused by some ghost or evil entity here's the complete article news.yahoo.com/granny-groping-ghost-explained-psychology-185608571.html

The scientific version sounds reasonable to me. So does the ghost version. As for which one is true...the world may never know. In all my years of chasing after ghosts I still haven't seen or experienced anything that I can positively identify as a ghostly experience. Anything is possible though. On the other hand since the person writing the article is obviously a rabid skeptic let me just say that not everything can be explained away so easily. Not all alien abductions are "sleep paralysis" or "hallucinations" and the same goes for ghostly encounters. There could be a whole heard of ghosts attacking that poor woman for all anybody knows. The only way to find out for sure is to do some more investigating. Some questions they might ask are, has the woman ever experienced anything like that before? And does it only happen in that one house or does the phenomenon follow her around from one place to another? If you ask enough questions sooner or later you will start finding some answers.

hypnopompic and hypnagogic activity... interesting...
That explains why I sometimes see strange writing on the walls around my room when I first wake up in the morning... it also explains some of the "flashes" I have had while going off to sleep...

Yup...it's like the brain is shifting from the conscious to the subconscious and they kind of merge together for a moment. The dreams can be very vivid when in that state. They can even be controlled to a certain extent so you can consciously explore the dream world.

I know a ghost raping someone is nuts, but I never forgot the above movie.

I don't think a ghost would rape somebody either. That sounds silly. It was probably just her imagination. Or maybe there really was a ghost there and it was doing something else and she just thought it was raping her. When confronted by a ghost people sometiomes panic and they don't think straight. She was probably scared out of her wits!
