Elmhurst, IL —
At first glance, the city of Elmhurst is a Chicago suburb pretty much like any other. What most people don’t know is that the city is filled with ghost stories and urban legends, some of which are as chilling as they are true.
These stories are the subject of the Voices from Beyond Tour led by Ray Johnson, Kristen Tillman and Beth Shields. A Brookfield resident, former criminal investigator and lover of urban legends, Johson handles the history behind the stories while Tillman and Shields monitor Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVPs. The two go to the sites of supposed hauntings and audio record, sometimes asking questions. Then, they bring the recordings back and amplify them to see what they can hear. For the tour, they use a portable projector and screen to present whatever they record that particular night.
“Some of the stuff is hard to hear,” Johnson said. “But sometimes it’s clear that you’re hearing voices, and it can be pretty creepy.”
The tour consists of seven sites: Elmhurst College’s Mill Theatre, a restless cemetery, a Chicago Fire relic, Seth Wadham’s “White Birch” homestead, the Elizabeth friendship path in Wilder Park, an empty lot that was once a sanitarium and the Glos mansion and mosoleum.
Although each of the sites offer a unique and chillling story of their own, Johnson says that his favorite is the Mill Theater.
“We all agree that it’s probably one of the more ‘active’ spots, even though it’s one of the more recent ones,” he said.
