Looks like Photoshop to me. I went to the actual NASA site, found the image just as on YouTube.
Any thoughts on what they would be hiding or why they would do this? A bad spot in there data being filled in or are they hiding something?

There is some images in there that appear to be matched. I believe it is because the images are composites stitched together to form a large image and when this was done, mistakes were made and some areas were overlapped and some composited images were not cut out during the layout. As for photoshop, Ive noticed that almost everything done today is brought through photoshop or something similar, especially astronomical images from both professionals and amateurs. It's not that they're trying to cheat and add things that shouldn't be, but instead to enhance and bring out faint details during processing that otherwise wouldn't show due to digital camera's which create "noise". They also stack images to gather other faint details and then send them through photoshop or something similar to finalize the process after modifying and stacking through other software such as Registax or the like. Ive been researching this heavily lately because I intend to do astrophotography in the near future when finances allow. I'm not exactly sure in this case with these images though. The question is I guess would be , was it done to hide something, or was it just a human error ? Some of those features could be lake beds from polar ice melting also,,,maybe. Shadows also cause images to appear different when taken from various angles or time of day or year. It is interesting.

UPDATE: NASA JPL Mars | Copy & Pasted Images at Gale Crater | SunsFlare Interesting Sunbow . Here is an updated version from the same person explaining how some of this can be done. Pretty cool . It does make me think and wonder.

I posted a link that had another photo that had duplicates in it. It might have been in the NASA thread...or maybe the Curiosity rover thread. It definitely has duplicates in it but it appears to have been blended together to look like a normal photo. Don't know what's up with that.

Thanks for your input here, Cliff!
I'd like to think this type of thing is error, or accidental.
If anyone had a true idea that we would find "odd" stuff on Mars, they knew that they were taking a risk of trying to be so upfront with us about the rover. Are these same people risking all for some sort of bet? Or did they have skilled "photoshop people" ready?
My statement, "risking all". What is really at risk here? Going public?
This is so exciting, in and of itself. That us "monkeys" have something riding around on Mars. ;D
But it isn't all we want!

Well...being someone who uses photo shop almost daily, this doesn't look like that to me. They have MUCH better programs than that. If they use a manipulating tool...it's not going to be obvious unless they want people to notice it. Photo shop is a cheap product compared to what a good engineer can do. The question would then be..why do they want people to ask questions about it. OR there really is nothing there to see. Sometimes....people just get really upset when they don't get to see what they want to see. How many people here believe already that there are alien bases on the moon? Mars too and maybe others. Then when you see pictures that show nothing...who's going to holler...conspiracy? Everyone who believes there are bases on other planets. We would gobble up photos showing alien bases and cities...and shout fraud when we see nothing. So why would aliens who want to remain secret...allow us to see them? Or do we really figure we're gonna sneak up on them and catch them on camera unawares? They are probably sipping mojitos and laughing their lil aliens but's of at the rover.

I think it is amazing and wonderful that we were able to get the rover there. I really do hope it can report some signed that in a past Martian age there was simple life.
My personal opinion is that in stitching together the images for this fun public web experience there was a bad spot, so someone just cut out a bit and pasted it over the flawed seam. If they were hiding something, the cut would have been from a different image which statistically would not have ever been found.

NASA has been retouching photos since way back during the early moon missions. They always have done it as far as I know. They use airbrush or photo editing software to highlight certain things or to cover things up, not necessarily because they are trying to hide things but because they want the photos to look as good as they can. This ensures that people are impressed with the photos and that they continue to provide the funds that NASA needs to operate.
Retouching photos is actually a very common process even outside of NASA. All of the photos of those super-models that you see are always touched up. So are most magazine photos, especially if it is used on the cover. Newspapers even used to retouch some photos before the were printed. Do you remember that famous photo of the UFO that appeared over Las Angeles and was bombarded by the military who fired several thousand rounds at it and didn't hit anything? When that photo was published in the paper it was altered and modified to make it appear more dramatic. Some of the search lights were brightened and a few more were added to it. It's just a common technique that advertisers and publishers use. Apparently, so does NASA for whatever reason.
It kind of makes you wonder though if what we are seeing on Mars is really what we are seeing. I don't think they should be fooling around with those images when everybody in the world is looking for the tiniest little detail that might suggest that life exists there.

We can never expect any honesty from our own people. If they find (as I expect they will) fossils or proof of life there..we'll be the last to hear about it. There's a lot of planet to cover too for a little rover..and I wouldn't be surprised to hear of 'malfunctions' in the near future which to me would mean...they found something big
