The "ghost" of the last commander of this last oppen/protected salt water port, opening to the Atlantic, can be seen before foul weather is due to hit Wilmington, North Carolina area, and just about any other time "he' decides to make an apperance, roaming the ruins of his last command. General William Whiting was mortally wounded in a massive union attack, by land and sea, in 1864. With the fall of the fort, basically spelled the end for supplies coming in from other countries for the Confederate troops, which were reduced to lving off the land ,once the fort was shut down. Whiting's grayish, as in a mist, or a more solid, gray clad figure is usually seen at dusk on the old parapet, gazing back to the road that comes directly to the fort from the northern direction

So goes the legends in and around Wilmington, N.C. that are related to the Civil War. BTW, Brandon Lee was making a movie there, died, and his "ghost" still haunts the area where movies were/are still made.
