Halle Berry will play an astronaut whose baby might be an alien
by Charlie Jane Anders
Extant is an early contender for "show with the most complicated premise of 2014." The TV show about a female astronaut whose husband made a robot baby, and who's pregnant with a possibly alien baby, sparked a network bidding war. And now it has a high-profile star: Halle Berry.
Berry has signed on to star in Extant, in a role which the network describes as "an astronaut who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history."
The "son" in that quote, presumably, is the android son that her husband created. And the "events" are presumably the impending birth of her extraterrestrial offspring. At least, that's if the earlier description of this show's premise in the trades was accurate. This show is airing on CBS next summer, alongside another show from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, the successful Under The Dome.
A network statement quotes Berry as saying:
I’m always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I’ll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I’ll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one.
