We need to NOT assume they think like we do...and we need to leave our ego's at home. We tend to adopt this superior attitude with other races when it might be much better for us to be humble. Not to assume a smile means something pleasant to them..it could mean we're baring our fangs as a suspicious dog might. Especially if the race doesn't have much of a useful mouth. Best and safest thing to do is to lower hands palm out to show nothing is hidden and wait for an indicator from them. IMO

If I were to ever meet some ETs I think what I would do is act like I'm paralyzed and then float up off of my bed into the air. That ought to freak 'em out for sure.

Expect they will be similar and different. Expect they will be humanoid in appearance, though alien life out there will abound in many forms (example being life in our oceans). But humanoid forms are tool makers generally, so ...technology in some broad term because they would have needed technology to travel here.
A form of basic etiquette can be used in the beginning going in....reflecting our best human values and then expect that etiquette to change immediately based on what we encounter and perceive. In every relationship there is something gained and lost, and ultimately we are changed to some degree. Expect the same would be true in this situation.
If the encounters should be pleasant ones... that etiquette we expressed to ET will be used toward our own kind too one would hope.

They are Human looking and very intelligent. another one It has gone as far as to have a tattoo put on the arch of his foot of what they look like from a different race . good to see you on again

www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/28/alien-life-guidelines-interacting-extraterrestrials_n_4169463.html Alien Life Experts Urge Creation Of Guidelines For Interacting With ExtraterrestrialsLiveScience | By Miriam Kramer Posted: 10/28/2013 Humanity should start thinking about how to interact with alien species long before coming into contact with extraterrestrial life, experts say. Coming up with a strict set of guidelines that govern the way people on future interstellar space missions study and interact with aliens is imperative before anyone blasts off to a distant world, according to attendees at Starship Congress in August. While a "prime directive" — the rule that prevented Star Fleet officers from interfering with the business of alien life-forms on TV's "Star Trek" — might be a little extreme, such a rule could help govern interactions between aliens and humans. [13 Ways to Contact Intelligent Alien Life] "In the event that we discover evidence of intelligent life on another world, that will be a social, cultural and technologically influential event to human affairs which will need to be managed with great care and to ensure our culture and their culture remains intact and not disrupted by this new knowledge," Kelvin Long, the founder of Project Icarus, said during a panel on Aug. 16. People traveling to distant stars will be carrying tangible and intangible aspects of human culture with them, so it should be curated responsibly before being sent to an alien planet, one expert said. "I think it comes down to how we're going," Armen Papazian, the CEO of the International Space Development Hub, said. "Do we trust that this is a beautiful universe, an incredible cosmos? Do we really believe that it's an amazing landscape, it's a bed of stars? What do we think we're going out there to find and are we going to embrace it or are we going to utilize? Are we trying to export our scarcity economics or are we trying to enjoy the abundant cosmos? … Whatever we are here, we're going to export wherever we go." It's possible that humans in the future will have no desire to land on exoplanets after free-roaming in space for years at a time, Icarus Interstellar president Richard Obousy said. "I'm not convinced that when we have the capabilities to build starships … that we'll want to go from one gravitational abyss to another gravitational abyss," Obousy said. "I'm not convinced that settling on planets or even moons is going to be necessary." Humans can't help but explore and interact with the world around them, Icarus Interstellar's James Benford said during the panel. Their reality will not be our reality. They will likely have visual sensations, but not very likely see teh human rainbow spectrum. They may or may not hear sounds in the range we hear them. Most likely they will have a sense of smell, even if it is mostly unconscious like it is for humans. I say this is likely because evolution must begin at a chemical level of smell-taste.
My list at first thought:
1.) Most important - have zero negative emotions: especially zero fear. The pheromones and other subtle queues which reveal fear (darting eyes, nervous body motions, ...) may not be familiar, but may be conveyed. They may be empathic and any negative emotion would end proper etiquette of two equal beings meeting.
2.) Be in a meditative state with all our attention present and zero thoughts running through our head. It is likely that if we are dealing with primitive or advanced beings, this will reflect their state. I believe that the current phase of humanity where we are totally lost in our ego, thinking mind, is highly unlikely in other beings. They may be telepathic (to words, thoughts, memories, images, mental sounds, ...) and so being totally present would be the only respectful way to meet them.

Maybe people here have already met interstellar neighbors (or dimensional neighbors) maybe they haven't. I tend to think on limited basis..we've had encounters..not relationships. TV and movies are not good guide lines to judge others by. They're either invaders or exactly as we are (minor differences). We could be entirely unique in our social and moral aspects and our religious beliefs are extremely complicated. I can hear it now..'omg...they're heathens..they don't believe in God'. We can't judge others period...starting with our own neighbors...and tell me that isn't still a world wide epidemic of trouble? Muslim vs Jew vs Christianity vs any other belief out there. I think..we need to make some strides in conquering that first.

Great points, jokelly. How could we ever expect to successfully encounter something outside of our own sphere of experience when we have issues dealing with the cultural diversity of our own species? As long as we continue to impose our own peculiar order upon the unknown, we will continue to react in depressingly familiar ways.

That is why aliens won't ever land on the White House lawn. If they have the technology to get themselves here then they will know what to expect there...weapons and stupid politicians. This is also probably why they are choosing who to interact with via the "abductions."

I agree sky. The fact that they do not come and get wrapped up in 'negotiations' indicates that they are a lot brighter than the humans who are running this chaos of a uncivilized fiasco that we are living in. We have a long way to go before we could expect to be met as an intelligent species. Anyone looking down on this planet would consider us savage barbarians (at best).
That being said, the people here all seem to be open minded and caring people. I believe that many people around the world have loving hearts and can envision a better world. Unfortunately we have let savage selfish people fight their way to the top, rather than promoting the humble people who are truly qualified to lead.
