DUCHESS OF ALBA AMONGST BEST DRESSED
By Gemma Quinn / 2010-08-14
Judging by these pictures it may be a little difficult to believe, but the Duchess of Alba has been crowned one of Vanity Fair’s ‘Internationally Best Dressed.’
The 71st Annual Best Dressed List features the likes of Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Javier Bardem and Alec Baldwin, fair enough, but when you read the eclectic list includes the slightly eccentric 83 year-old it may be a little hard to continue reading.
In the high society magazine she cites her favourite items of clothing as “dresses and accessories” and her ideal style as “carefree , very hippie.”
But for those unfamiliar with the 18th Duchess of Alba, just who is she? Well for a start she’s a descendant of King James II and is one of the richest women in Spain. According to Wikipedia, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart is ‘a celebrated figure of the international jet-set scene’ and has more titles recognised by an existing government than any other noble.
Her first wedding in 1947, cost the modern-day equivalent of $20 million and was considered to be the last great feudal wedding in Spain. The Duchess has 6 children who are reported to oppose her plans to marry her current boyfriend who is 24 years her junior.
When news broke of her hitting Vanity Fair’s Internationally Best Dressed list for the second year running, the Duchess was enjoying some relaxation on the summer party island of Ibiza along with the rich and famous.
