I'm going to present the following story and THEN reveal the source. It is a story that would not be so unusual here?
He awoke in the night to be confronted by an angel, who put him on a winged donkey that carried him a long distance from his home (details intentally omitted for the moment). They then parked the donkey (tied it to a wall) and ascended UP THROUGH THE HEAVENS. He was shown many amazing things including the torments of hell and seven levels of heaven. Eventually he was before the throne of God. After returning the earth again, the winged donkey brought him back to his bed in the same night.
OK This is an account of Muhammad's night journey to Jesrusalem (Chapters 9 and 13, Sura 17:1 as translated and related by Malcolm Clark, Professor Emeritus of Religion in Islam for Dummies. The author taught philosophy and religion including courses in Biblical studies, Islam, the Qur'an, etc etc for 30 years. He is no dummy. The book is dense and I'm picking my way through it. One of the interesting things (to me) is that although the Bible was worked over in 200AD and more taken out than left in - the writings about Muhammad and about various people's interpretation of what he meant and how it is to be honored are ALL there. So in the Apopcrypha (what was taken OUT of the Bible) there are fantastic descriptions of rooms of glowing crystal and the young Jesus forming birds out of mud and breathing life into them. That is no longer accepted text. Muhammad's journey by winged donkey accompanied by an angel is still available.
I mean no disrepect to anyone reading this who is a Muslim nor to the historical and religious figure of Muhammad. All the religions of the world have interesting creation myths, and many share similarities such as a Great Flood, frightening angels, virgin births, etc. One difference is that Muhammad was never called nor called himself a god, or related to God, other than being a man that God spoke to and gave him information to be passed on to his followers.
I offer a possible explanation of the above story, without in any way implying that I know anything. Its just my story inspired by what I read.
A man who was becoming an important leader (but still had a small following)and who later created unique rules for getting along with other people of other religions, woke up with a bright light and strange being in his bedroom. He was taken by winged donkey (a small ship?) a large distance and then ascended to heaven - on a bigger ship, tractor beam, whatever. He was shown various possible fates of humans including hellish ones and eventually faced something powerful that he interpreted as the throne of God. He then was brought home and woke up later in his bed.
I'm fascinated by reading this. Once again I wonder how much humanity has been shaped and meddled with. Some of the shaping brought us to civilization - a much higher level of cooperation than we had achieved on the planet so far. But IMO we weren't ready for it. Zacharia Sitchin (old testament and Sumerian scholoar) believes that the first population of modified humans were wiped out intentionally by a great flood. Apparently there is a layer of red clay over the top of early ruins in Sumer that substanciates this. Another generation of humans was attempted - these were more controllable and also some of the Visitors took their side and protected them. And here we are.
