The Nightmare: A New Documentary About the Terror of Sleep ParalysisBy Rob Schwarz May 2, 2015 The Nightmare is a new documentary that delves into the horrifying world of sleep paralysis, a strange phenomenon that leaves sufferers immobilized in their beds, awake but unable to move. They also, sometimes, experience terrifying hallucinations of demons and shadow people, among other things. While I’ve never experienced any of this myself, the trailer here is certainly unnerving. One commenter on Reddit, who saw the documentary at SXSW, mentioned that the film isn’t so much about why sleep paralysis occurs, but rather how it feels. It highlights eight individuals who suffer from the haunting affliction, and recreates their disturbing experiences in, from what I can tell, a pretty dramatic way. Directed by Rodney Ascher (who has experienced sleep paralysis himself), The Nightmare is set to release on June 5, 2015, and you can check out its official Facebook page here. Might be worth a look.

I finally watched this documentary on netflix a couple weeks ago.
Being a long-time sufferer of sleep paralysis, it naturally gave me the heebie jeebies.
One of the men on this program definitely made me nervous.
He said he had an early memory of being a young toddler in a crib and he woke up in sleep paralysis and saw figures that were made up of what he described as "television static" and they looked like grays as far as the head shape, body thinness and black eyes.
I almost shrieked when I saw those figures appear in the reenactment. Every time the figures showed up again on that documentary I looked away. My boyfriend, being the butt that he was, paused it the third time they showed up on the screen and said, "Wooooahh! Creeeeeppppyyy! Look at that!"
I refused... then I sneaked a quick look then looked away again.
I also one time saw a figure comprised of television static, but it didn't have a face or eyes to speak of. The only difference was that my figure was multi-colored television static (i specifically remember reds and blues) and the figures the man in this program saw were black and white static. The odd thing though is that it wasn't a sleep paralysis episode, it was a lucid dream because I was moving around.
It was one of those dreams where I woke up, feeling totally awake, I thought, I should probably get up, so I walked to the door and opened it. As soon as I opened the door, the static figure rushed at me, grabbed me by the wrists and slammed me against the far wall opposite the door. I screamed of course and the static figure began screaming at me, right in front of my face but he had no face- just colored television static. He was screaming at me and I had no idea what he was saying, it wasn't a language I was familiar with.
Then of course I woke up...
Very odd... the human mind can be scary when it wants to be I guess...

But those early morning things, feeling awake right out of dream-time, opening your eyes and seeing things . . I do see these "visions" as if they are "television" static, and in certain colors, that also (at the time) make me aware that I must be in that "inbetween state". The other morning I was laying on my side, and looked to the close wall on my left. Next to the cord of my cell phone charger, a pinkish, static-appearing stink bug (they had been very vibrant green this past summer) was crawling up the wall. I blinked, and blinked again, and it was still there, but had moved up the wall at a leisurely pace. (I wish I had thought about trying to move!). I don't think the "bug" was really there. i think i was semi-awake, but the bug was a weird color, static, and artificial looking, though it moved "normally", and I did just go back to sleep. And the next day I moved my cord farther out of my range of vision, as if the apparation involved the cord in some way?

Sounds like a hypnagogic hallucination, or however the hell you spell it. I've had that too before upon first awakening from sleep. The human mind conjures up some interesting stuff... Hmm...
