We need a section for the very 'unique' (mind-stretching). Nazi scientists actually tried to create talking dogs. ' An Airedale terrier named Rolf became a mythic figure of the project after teachers said he could spell by tapping his paw on a board (the number of taps represented the various letters of the alphabet). With that skill in hand, he mused on religion, learned foreign languages and even asked a noblewoman, "Can you wag your tail?" Perhaps most outlandish is the claim by his German masters that he asked to serve in the German army because he disliked the French. Another mutt barked "Mein Fuhrer" when asked to describe Hitler. And Don, a German pointer, is said to have imitated a human voice to bark, "Hungry! Give me cakes!" in German.' news.yahoo.com/s/time/20110526/wl_time/httpnewsfeedtimecom20110525hownaziscientststriedtocreateanarmyoftalkingdogsxidrssfullworldyahoo

I just now saw this post. Animals learning to communicate with humans via paw-tapping, sign language or other such basic means is not really all that unusual. Seals, gorillas, parrots and several others have all been trained in forms of basic communication. Some have even learned to use logic and reasoning to answer questions that were asked. Animals never cease to amaze me. As for the rest of what they said about the dogs imitating human words...maybe that really was crazy.

This is as true as Im sitting here writing this. I grew up with a poodle named "bo-bo" and my mother taught him to say " I want my ball mama" in plain english ! After he would say it clearly, she would throw the ball and back he came .

There is a great video of Robin Williams (great spontaneous comic) interacting with a bottle nosed dolphin in captivity. He starts acting like a dolphin (swimming motions and head movements) and then the dolphin starts doing Robin William being a dolphin and he is cracking up - they are both sharing what I think is one of defining acts of intelligence (humor). Too bad the dolphin is doing life without parole...
