I don't think it was the climb that tore the plane apart but rather the fall. My personal opinion about what happened is that Mantell was chasing something...whether a UFO or a skyhook balloon or whatever...and he blacked out from lack of oxygen which is a very common thing for people to do if they climb to high altitudes too quickly. After that the plane went into a freefall and that is when it started coming apart. In all likelihood Mantell never even knew what happened. If you go back and look at page 1 of this thread Steve gave a pretty good description of the crash and the photos that were taken. He pretty much said the same thing that I just did. He also mentioned a Project Sign report that stated that no radiation was found at the scene. It would seem that the wreckage from the crash was pretty much what one would expect from a typical plane crash. That's just my personal thoughts on the matter. I definitely do not for a second think that he was chasing Venus like the official explanation claimed. No experienced pilot would be that stupid. The Skyhook balloon explanation makes a little more sense but I'm still not 100% satisfied with it. The balloon explanation has been just a little too overused by the military for my tastes. According to them everything is either swamp gas or a balloon. If aliens ever did decide to land on the White House lawn I can just imagine what the headlines would be. "A balloon filled with swamp gas accidentally landed on the White House lawn today..."

something just hit me . When I lived in Dyer In. My neighbor that lived across the street was a Mantell . One was a rescue recovery diver . Drew was the one and he died diving in a lake in Crown Point IN . I think the Mantells could be a related to the clan of Cpt Mantell . as that family came from Ky. Hmm , Very interesting

There's additional info in here I hadn't heard before: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantell_UFO_Incident-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From 'Unusual Kentucky' unusualkentucky.blogspot.com/2008/05/death-of-thomas-mantell.htmlThis was at 1:45 p.m. during the day. The people in the control tower who are trained to identify aerial objects say it wasn't a weather balloon or plane. Investigators first dismissed the object as being the planet Venus but Astronomers later confirmed that Venus would have most likely been too difficult to see. I know as an amateur astronomer that Venus is visible at certain times of the day with the unaided eye but in the reports witnesses describe this object displaying movements that doesn't fit. According to this article above there were other sightings before and after the crash also. It would be nice to know what the other witnesses described. I'll keep looking.

www.ufodigest.com/article/anniversary-captain-mantell%E2%80%99s-fatal-ufo-pursuitThis article mentions him being partially decapitated. I'm not sure what to think of this case except that he was chasing something and others in the surrounding area's saw something also. I think he did lose consciousness at that altitude and like the one witness described his plane broke apart during a tumbling descent. Regardless of what he was chasing he was a hero in my opinion and hoannably performed his duty which unfortunately cost him his life.

I agree Cliff..he was a hero. I absolutely believe the reports that he was chasing a UFO and most likely lost consciousness and crashed resulting in injuries too critical to survive. He should be honored.

I also want to note something about the things people have said about Mantell most suredly knowing that he might be giving up his life to "chase" this object. He was a professional. I do think that initially he did know what he was doing, and was very clear that he wasn't looking at Venus, or any other excuse put forward. What I wonder about, is the "dream-like state" that is often reported by individuals as they get closer to such an object.
