A side note: this guy has done the same thing with other animals. On a 1 to 10 scale of awareness, he assigns deer a value of 4. Wild turkeys are more difficult to approach in this manner, so he gives them a value of 7. The most difficult animal to sneak up on, in his opinion, was the kit fox. He stated that a kit fox could hear your heart beating within a certain distance.

That's actually a myth. www.snopes.com/critters/wild/turkey.aspDomestic animals are intentionally bred to be stupid and docile thereby making them easier to control. Sometimes this intentional de-evolutionary breeding causes some abnormal side effects like turkeys that will sometimes stare up at the sky, whether it is raining or not, for long periods of time. The reason why they do it is a genetic condition called tetanic torticollar spasms that induces abnormal behavior. This is probably how the myth about turkeys looking up and drowning got started. As most game hunters will attest, wild turkeys are popular prey due to their keen intelligence and superior senses. I accompanied a fellow on a wild turkey hunt, and I was able to witness, first hand, just how savvy Tom turkeys really are. We were positioned behind a blind, and had an excellent view of a group of wild turkeys in a clearing. The hunter used a call to snare the attention of the closest male. He was an experienced turkey hunter, and whispered his tactics to me as the hunt progressed. At first, he said it was going too easily...which meant that the Tom was suspicious and was likely to see through his ruse at any moment. This hunter was very cautious, however, and barely moved as he used the call to keep the male turkey's interest. I have never seen anything like it. The Tom turkey would move forward a few paces, looking away as he did so, and then come to a sudden stop, staring directly at our blind! It was almost as if he were trying to catch the hunter in the act...and if the hunter wasn't as experienced as he was, the turkey would have done so easily. Every time the turkey would do that, the hunter froze completely still, holding his breath. As the turkey came closer to our position, he started moving his gun into position...one small motion at a time. When the bird was close enough to safely shoot, I watched as the turkey suddenly turned around, ready to run away...but it was too late for him. Wild turkeys are very intelligent. I know it is a myth, it was meant to make you laugh. LOL! Do I really have that dry of a sense of humor? It is just hard for me to get too serious, I rarely allow myself to take anything to seriously because when I do I go too far in tune and it is too much to try to filter. So I break things up with attempts at comedy. Basically, it keeps me sane to laugh.

I know this is a bit off subject but I have to ask, on your picture you have it captioned the Mufons are coming, what in the world is a Mufon? ? MUFON is the acronym for the Mutual UFO Network, one of the largest UFO investigative groups in the country. Before we had this forum a lot of the people here were members of a forum that was being operated by MUFON. That's how we all originally got to know one another and became friends. Then one day MUFON decided to shut their forum down. They didn't bother to tell anybody or give any warning, they just pulled the plug on it which left all of the members totally lost and confused. A few members decided they did not like the fact that their forum had been taken away from them, especially in the rude way that it had been, so they decided to create a new one. In the process there were quite a few harsh words exchanged back and forth between MUFON and their former members. For a while MUFON was even trying to stop the new forum from succeeding. Things got to be pretty interesting. That's why my avatar says, "The Mufons are coming! The Mufons are coming! Ahhh...!" The avatar and the caption was originally created by one of our other members. I just thought it was so funny that I adopted it as my own.

So much water under the bridge. Many of the Mufon players that were involved in closing down 'their' website (and other damage) are gone, a few perhaps dead, or don't or didn't ever care.
It was an embarrassment to the Mufon BOD that many in Mufon on the old website were expressing their views too freely...lol...often directed back at Mufon venting their frustrations about the organization.
Since the Mufon Board of Directors review and determine every word that goes into their Mufon Journal, (the editor of the Journal then told me this first hand), the only way some expressed issues then was through that old Mufon Web site. Mufon still suffers from an acute low membership problem and finances (this was reported to me just as recently as yesterday by a state director friend in another state).
The old web site was too controversial for the old farts. The then new STAR teams, central control of cases (in Denver then) vs. state chapter control, Bigelow, Mufon's embarrassing mishandling their grant money from Bigalow....on and on.
Some of the astonishingly weird ideas some in Mufon and their Board of Directors then wanted to do with that grant money....the powers that be then beginning (or quite well along) remarkably resembling the government entities they imagined they were so paranoid themselves about! LOL. Perhaps some did not like another holding a mirror and asking them to look at themselves. Some of the powers that be then removed those holding that mirror.
Though the UFO phenomenon has changed much since 1969 when Mufon was formed, the Mufon website became such that it had little to do about UFO's, but internal issues.
More openness on the part of Mufon's board (a little openness since..but much more needed), the amazing revelation Mufon has apparently just discovered they need to review and analyze their own cases, a huge criticism I had with Mufon, seems to have soaked in perhaps. What to ignore and what to focus on.
But sadly, the sad old farts in many areas of Mufon still exist protecting their ego castles, who are sadly so often interviewed on radio and sometimes on camera as media regulars...who have not performed and completed a field case investigation personally for years!
Ahhh, yes...the sad old days... but hopefully it is improving. Personalities and leadership from Harzan, MacDonald, Kathleen Marden have come to the fore. I remain if a bit critical still...optimistic.

I sometimes kind of miss the old feud we were having with MUFON. Things have quieted down a lot since then. I'm not really sure if that is a good thing or a bad one but it is what it is...

It sounds like a forum I would have probably left before the shut down. I really don't care for internet feuding and all that. I figure, I am a grown up and have acquired communication skills. if a person can't decently debate an issue with me or disagree then agree to disagree with me in a constructive way then there is no point in me bothering with them. It is kind of sad though that such a huge organization fell apart so abruptly especially being as it contained members from as far back as the sixties when a lot of the UFO stuff really got started. A lot of valuable personal experience and information gets lost like that.

The MUFON forum had its good points and its bad ones. The good points were that there were a lot of people there sharing information and learning about things that they had never been able to openly discuss before anywhere else. If it had not been for the MUFON forum many of the us probably never would have shared our stories with anybody. The bad thing about it is that there were so many people there with differing points of view that there were constant arguments going on. MUFON has so much recognition that the forum attracted a lot of people and many of them were just trolls and debunkers looking for a fight. There were times when I really loved being a part of it and other times when I got so sick of the BS that I would leave for weeks at a time. That's why we try to encourage people to be friendly here. We don't need any bickering and yelling and fighting like we had before. That doesn't accomplish anything.
