*The anomaly is variously described as a golden, red, or blue light but is always seen as one or more floating orbs
*In the early 1940s, the Army Corps of Engineers studied the lights in a failed attempt to scientifically explain themBy Daily Mail Reporter 29 September 2013 A photographer has lifted the lid on a famously unexplained light phenomenon that appears in an area of the Missouri known as the Devil's Promenade Locals in the Ozarks hills say they have seen the light and heard the tales of it all their lives. The name of the area is the title of the series, created by artists Lara Shipley and Antone Dolezal,- but the mysterious apparition itself is known to the townspeople in southwest Missouri as the Spook Light. Spook Light appears as a basketball-sized orb of light, but only every so often and only by chance on a road called E50, where the rolling Ozark hills disappear into the endless flatness of Kansas and Oklahoma. Spooklight Road: Southwest Missouri's West 50 road is famous to area people as where Spook Light, a bright and aptly named anomaly On E50, also known as Spook Road, there's a gathering south of the town of Joplin each year at Halloween, when hopeful visitors and locals alike seek a chance encounter with the Spook Light. Meanwhile, the cause of the light--which hovers in the sky and is seen to change colors as it moves towards and away from the viewer--remains a mystery. Even the Army Corps of Engineers once tried to pinpoint the cause of the floating orb. They traveled to the area outside Joplin, a town now known as the 2011 site of a devastating F5 tornado, to study the Spook Light in the early 1940s. They were unable to come to any conclusions. Guesses as to its origins run from everyday expulsions of gas from the areas abundant shale deposits to UFOs. I've been wanting to go up to Missouri and check this out for a long time. I was planning on doing it this past summer but my vacation was ruined by mechanical difficulties. The Spook Light is also sometimes called the Hornet Light, but I have no idea why. I've been investigating weird lights like this and the Marfa lights for years and I still don't have a clue what they are. They definitely exist though. These are true unsolved mysteries that people actually have a good chance of seeing on a regular basis if they are willing to take the time to go out to the area and look. Kind of surprising that more scientists haven't gotten involved in researching them though.

The Devil’s Promenade is as dedicated to the the inhabitants of the rural, impoverished area as it is to the Spook Light. The series paints a vivid picture of both the haunting landscape and the fascinating people who populate it. I believe that this is by choice. One of my best friends grew up here, even after her mother died of alcoholism, and she was physically separated from 2 siblings (they've since reunited). What I'm trying to say, is regardless of their circumstances, I would not be looking down on them or thinking they are stupid; the country bumpkin-type. If you recall, a lot of people tried driving down there to see what they could "collect" of peoples' stuff after the bad tornado. It got so bad that we had articles in our city paper with warnings from the local Joplin police, detailing how many people were already visiting their jails. I wonder if this is also similar to the Brown Mountain lights?

I wonder if this is also similar to the Brown Mountain lights? Yes, it is. It's also the same phenomenon as the Marfa Lights, the Bragg Road Light, Bailey's Prairie Light, the lights at Enchanted Rock, the Paulding Lights and numerous others. These lights appear all over the world in certain locations. Some are more active than others. The Marfa Lights appear on such a regular basis that they actually built a viewing area along the highway so people can stop and watch them. Tour buses bring busloads of people in every night. They are amazing sights to see when they show up. I can't believe more scientists aren't interested in figuring these crazy things out. This is a true scientific mystery that appears and can be observed on a regular basis. It's not like a UFO that shows up one time and never comes back again.

Now i will ask what I have been asking for over 20 years. They sit out there with their camera night after night searching for the lights .. why don't they just go to where the lights are and look for themselves.? The Cowboys even seen them way back in history. I do know they inspected where they thought the location was during the day and found nothing unusual.. It may be something weird in nature going on also. But yes it could be ufos i guess.

They have gone to where the lights are supposed to be but they can never find them. Apparently in most cases they can only be seen from a distance and while looking from a certain direction. A few people have reported seeing them up close but those reports are not common. Some people have even reported that the lights moved away from them as they tried to get closer. I don't have a clue what those crazy things are.

How weird, I had no idea this was so popular! Me and a couple of friends were going to drive up there and check it out awhile back but never did. I guess a local legend when it is close to home doesn't see like a big deal as it might to outsiders who didn't grow up hearing about it.

They say that most people who live in New York never go see the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. I guess if people live near something they take it for granted because they figure they can always go see it anytime they want to. I'm fascinated by these spook lights because this truly is an unexplained scientific phenomenon that can actually be observed on a regular basis. Most skeptics just try to explain them away as car headlights or swamp gas ( ) or some ridiculous thing like that without ever even going out to look at them. If you actually see them in person you will know you are seeing something extremely unusual. Just make sure you're not looking at car headlights or swamp gas first.

If you do make the trip out there just keep in mind that you may not see the spook light the first time you go. These lights can be very unpredictable. Some spook lights only show up once every few weeks or even months so you really have to get lucky to see them. Others appear more frequently. It just depends on the location. The Marfa Lights are the most consistent...usually two or three times per week they will be visible. The rest of the time busloads of uninformed and gullible tourists stand out there in the desert "Ooohing" and "Aaaahing" car headlights that are visible in a certain direction from the viewing center. Silly tourists. It pays to do a little research before making the trip so you will know what you are looking for and what to expect. Here is an earlier thread that I started about the Missouri spook light a long time ago. theedgeofreality.proboards.com/thread/2386/hornet-lightIt used to be called The Hornet Light several decades ago. Don't know why they called it that or why they stopped calling it that. I don't even know what they call it nowadays. There used to be a small spook light museum out there a long time ago too. The building is supposedly still there but it's been closed for years. I would love to know what they had in it and where all of the exhibits went. I'm sure they were probably just photos but it still would have been cool to see it. I love museums. Perhaps I should combine these two threads together since they are the same topic.
