8.9 quake hit Japan with a resulting tsunami..the devastation is horrible. Aftershocks in the 7 point range. They predict more tsunami's and bad aftershocks..also tsunami warnings for Guam, Indonesia,Hawaii and many more countries. Looking at this I don't see how they won't loose many lives. Japan has several nuclear plants and structural damage is a big worry along with the out of control fires. They claim this is the 5th largest earthquake ever recorded in the history of recorded earthquakes, and the largest to ever hit Japan. The devastation is unbelievable. It looks like a thousand Godzillas went rampaging through. It will probably take years to repair all of the damage. Our best wishes go out the our Japanese friends.

All the ones I posted came after the big one. There will probably be many more small ones over the next few days. It's going to be hard for our Japanese friends over there. I hope they make it through ok.

Compared to the San Francisco 1989 Earthquake - the latest in Japan news is reporting was a 1000 times stronger. Probably the largest Japan has yet experienced. USGS earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/2011/usc0001xgp/#mapsCell phoned a family friend in Fort Bragg, California to check up on him as he owns several fishing boats there. We were talking this morning briefly around 8am pacific when he first tsunami surges about 2 to 3 feet began to run through the harbor there below him. The surges were rushing out back into the ocean at that moment. Several more all today. He is fine, his boats are fine, his piers are intact. Lucky. He chose to stay put. Many boats went out to sea to ride it out. A number where returning this evening he reported. In Crescent City, they suffered much more damage. Many boats that went to sea to ride it out are now low on fuel, and there are no piers now there for them to dock. But Fort Bragg suffered about 25% pier damage to the total piers and jetty's there. Trying to get him to set up a permanent web cam from his house so the world can watch. You can get good views of the same harbor if you watch the film 'The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming' of which portions of that motion picture was filmed there in 1964. Actually not too much has changed since then. Steve

I just went to the Alaskan earthquake website. We've been having a lot more small tremors than usual. I hope we don't get a big quake too...
Lois, I hope you feel better honey! ~hugs~

It was 1,700 feet or 520 meters, almost twice the height of the Eiffel Tower. The Tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 8.3 earthquake caused an enormous landslide along the Fairweather Fault. The resulting crash of rock into water, caused the largest wall of water in human history. The deadly wave hurtled at jet speeds and wiped out everything within a four mile radius. Fortunately Lituya Bay was virtually uninhabited, otherwise it would have caused unprecedented destruction, far greater than the tsunami that struck Thailand in 2004. At the time of the colossal wave, there were only three fishing boats anchored in the bay and amazingly only one sank, with two people losing their lives. The other boats were able to surf the crest of the tsunami. The Science Channel and Dr George PC quoted one of the survivors Howard G. Ulrich in a recent article about the tsnumami. Ulrich heard the sound of the enormous wave ripping through the land and obscuring the sky, he reportedly said to his 8-year-old child “Son…it’s time to pray.” TO CONTINUE READING CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

They had an explosion in a building surrounding one of the reactors caused by vented hydrogen gas. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_japan_earthquakeThey had two more aftershocks last night a 6.2 and a 6.4...all big in their own right. Bad enough with the quake and tsunami damage now they have to be concerned with radiation leaking into the air...exposure to even small amounts can cause deformities for the next generation. You would think..with the planet itself under stress..people would refine their priorities a bit...cease petty bickering...learn to value what they do have..when do people ever wake up?

I just now read that a second reactor is failing. "Nuclear agency officials said Japan was injecting seawater into the core — an indication, Hibbs said, of "how serious the problem is and how the Japanese had to resort to unusual and improvised solutions to cool the reactor core." On the plus side, unlike Chernobyl this reactor is housed in a sealed container so a meltdown isn't likely but they are admitting it's still a possibility if they can't cool it. Naturally..being a government..they're not admitting very much that could add to the panic. They've evacuated thousands away from the areas and there are so many pictures of these people walking around with their blankets looking lost.

I feel better tonight, but not with the situation that is still going on in Japan.. One thing just leads to another.. over there.. I hate to hear the death toll in the end. Japan is like a volcano, which could just one day be taken under the ocean.. After all it is a small island when you think about it. Where would the inhabitants go.. their culture and history. I should not say this. But it is something I have thought about from time to time.. Islands do sink, small ones as of now anyway..
My husband witness a small Island sink when he was on a naval ship. He said the ship went though a sea of sand. One could see no water. Just sand after it sunk. Ron [spotless] sent me pictures of such a happening a long time ago.. My husband looked at the photos someone put with the story. They witness it also.. I thought at first I was viewing a dessert, then I read the story.
Time will tell. They are a strong people, and will go on. I just pray this stops. I could not believe how many quakes had hit Japan the past month. until sky put them on..

Over 10,000 dead in one small town alone..thousands missing and the death toll will rise horrifically. Homeless..in the middle of winter..hungry and grief stricken..and terrified plus not knowing the outcome of these reactors..I read one is in a partial meltdown..radiation hangs around for a very long time. These people have lost everything. I am reminding myself every day now..how very fortunate I am. We don't have much..but we are warm, fed, mostly healthy and my children all live within 2 blocks of me. The library has all the books I could want..my computer reaches very long distances..me an God..we be mates..how much better could it be? I'll remind myself a LOT more often when I think of Japan.

I had no idea the death toll was that high, but looking at the pictures that I have seen it does not surprise me. The devistation is horrendous. I wish there was something we could do to help but they are on the other side of the planet. I guess all we can do is remember those poor people in our heart and in our prayers...and try to live better lives ourselves. You never know when something like this might happen. I'm sure they weren't expecting the world to come to an end as they were going about their daily lives that day. I like that quote you gave, Jo. It is one of my favorites... "God and Jesus and all them apostles. They were all fishermen, just like me. Yep. Straight to heaven for Mick Dundee. Yep. Me and God, we'd be mates..."It's a very simplistic way of looking at things, but very true. I think we should all be mates.
