I expect the Ring of Fire to remain active as the tectonic plates adjust to Japan's new position on the rim. I do believe this was a subduction earthquake meaning one plate slid under the other plate. Subduction quakes tend to be more violent and you will feel more of a jolt if you are close to the epicenter. Well this goes for all earthquakes but the subduction quake just feels sharper. I've felt a small subduction quake (6+) and it feels different than a strike slip quake. I'm in the process of renewing the earthquake kit as it's been awhile since I felt there may be a need.

Dr. Michio Kaku's Tweets About Japan's Reactors michiokaku I am on my way to lecture in Mexico City. Will try to be on Good Morning America tomorrow at 7 by satellite No Bottom in Sight! We are witnessing a science experiment with the emergency teams making steps up as they go along -............. bit.ly/dFDHH0 Update: 3 reactors are in various stages of melting or core damage. Situation currently is stable but very uncertain. 2 explosions.

note to interested folks: Japan is stocking up on iodine pills - this in a country that wraps their food in seaweed (high iodine). If one takes iodine, then the radioactive version (that will be floating around in the atmosphere) is not taken up because the body has enough. Its particularly important for growing children to have supplemental iodine. If in doubt - talk to a pharmacist or informed alternative medicine practitioner. There probably isn't enough for everyone if people start buying it. I gave it to my kids when the Cheynobel cloud went over - drops in their orange juice.

www.aolnews.com/2011/03/14/explosion-heard-at-japan-nuclear-plant/?icid=maing|aim|dl1|sec1_lnk2|50012 Japan Faces Catastrophic Radiation Leak From QuakeMar 14, 2011 – 7:15 PM SOMA, Japan -- Japan's nuclear safety agency says a fire in a reactor at a crippled nuclear power plant in tsunami-ravaged northeastern Japan has been extinguished. The fire broke out Tuesday at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in one of the hardest-hit provinces in last week's massive earthquake and tsunami. Meanwhile, radiation was spewing from the Dai-ichi plant in a dramatic escalation of the 4-day-old catastrophe, forcing the government to tell people nearby to stay indoors to avoid exposure. In a nationally televised statement, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation had spread from four reactors and told people living within 19 miles (30 kilometers) of the Dai-ichi complex to stay indoors to avoid radiation sickness. I'm not trying to stick my head in the sand and ignore the problem or anything, but I personally don't think the nuclear situation in Japan is as bad as the news media is making it out to be. The news media has always had an anti-nuclear agenda and they always blow things way out of proportion in order to get people's attention. I remember how screwed up the reporting was about Hurricane Katrina in the days and weeks immediately following it. It seemed like the media did not get anything right. they are probably screwing the facts up again now. Nuclear reactors are designed to contain a meltdown just in case one should ever occur, and if the containment system works then very little radiation will be released into the environment. A good example of this is what happened at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania when they had a meltdown there in 1979. The containment system worked the way it was designed. The reactors in Japan were built at the same time as the one at Three Mile Island and have the same design so hopefully they will contain any meltdowns that occur. Here's a website that I found on the Three Mile Island disaster. www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/3mile-isle.html

Ordinarily I'd agree but the last explosion knocked a hole in the containment unit of the 4 reactor and spent coolant was exposed ( was wondering what they were going to do with radioactive sea water anyway)..they now have nuclear readings in Tokyo..(not lethal but enough to worry about years down line) and even our carrier the Ronald Regan had to move further away. 3 of the reactors are now leaking minor levels. Added up..and with them getting 6. aftershocks to shake up already damaged equipment...I think it could become a very bad catastrophe. I'm not going by the news though. I was listening to physicist Michio Kaku who was saying that it's so bad that the people working on it are making up solutions as they go with protocols out the window and they're requesting help from other countries to contain it.

My girlfriend gave me a Bonsai tree kit for Valentine's Day. The Bonsai tree is one of many symbols of Japanese culture.
Ironically, my Bonsai tree has just sprouted today... this saddens me... but it's also beautiful at the same time...
~sigh~
I hope the country of the Japanese People will sprout again just as my tree has done...

'Amid the horror and devastation of the nuclear crisis in Japan, it can be easy to miss the heroism of the 50 emergency workers trying to prevent the full meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility. It's not exaggeration to say that the safety of thousands of Japanese citizens hinges on the efforts of the crew of cleanup workers left behind after the remainder of the facility's roughly 800 employees have been evacuated amid hazardous levels of radiation. Even in a culture that places a premium on self-sacrifice, these ordinary workers are being extraordinarily selfless -- and could conceivably make the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow citizens' well-being.' news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110315/ts_yblog_thelookout/japanese-nuclear-plant-workers-emerging-as-heroic-figures-in-tragedyFire has broken out again in the #4 reactor.

Not to take anything away from possible space lookie loos but some of these sightings could be earthquake lights. 'An earthquake light is an unusual luminous aerial phenomenon that reportedly appears in the sky at or near areas of tectonic stress, seismic activity, or volcanic eruptions. Once commonly challenged, it was not until photographs were taken during the Matsushiro earthquake swarm in Nagano, Japan, from 1965 through 1967, that the seismology community acknowledged their occurrence'. The lights are reported to appear while an earthquake is occurring, although there are reports of lights before or after earthquakes, such as reports concerning the 1975 Kalapana earthquake en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_light

I then searched the National UFO Reporting Center and found nothing either. I suspect if the story was legit this site would have it. Some thoughts, MDaisy

We knew someone who was living near Van Nuys when a series of earthquakes hit. While he was in the shower he did see Earthquake lights right before an earthquake hit.

www.examiner.com/ufo-in-vancouver/iaea-director-general-s-ufo-invasion-concerns-japan-nuclear-meltdown-analysis IAEA Director Generals UFO Invasion Concerns in Japan Nuclear Meltdown AnalysisSecret messages encrypted backwards in the remarks of International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano reveal unconscious concerns about a “UFO invasion” in the face of what Prime Minister Naoto Kan has called Japan's “most severe crisis ... since World War II”. Britain's Daily Mail newspaper is reporting that fuel rods in three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant appear to be melting after emergency cooling systems were knocked out by a tsunami following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday. The secret UFO messages of the IAEA Director General are the subject of a new episode of the Secret Message Report – Podcast Edition. Intellectual Progress Evidence for a progressive Japanese intellectual outlook towards UFO contact mirrors initiatives from prominent Canadian figures active in disclosure and truth campaigns. Examples of progressive UFO perspectives from Japanese leadership include the statements of former Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura, who told the audience at a government policy briefing that “UFO's are real,” and former First Lady Miyuki Hatoyama who wrote about her experiences with nocturnal out-of-body travels on a UFO that took her to Venus. Examiner.com has reported how former Canadian Minister of National Defence Paul Hellyer made several public statements regarding UFO's including his comments at an Exopolitics conference held at the University of Toronto where he warned the audience about US plans for the militarization of space. Such an evident, progressive intellectual outlook provides the cultural and political setting through which the secret UFO messages of IAEA Deputy General Yukiya Amano were communicated. www.huliq.com/10282/ufo-sightings-over-japan-predicted-secret-british-alien-report-filesBRAY’ POINT – Confirmed reports of UFOs “hovering” and thousands of “flashing lights” over the epicenter of Friday’s main earthquake in Japan – located off Miyagi Prefecture, about 230 miles northeast of Tokyo – and UFO’s spotted near Osaka and Yokohama, are predicted in the recent British government release of 8,500 pages of secret unidentified flying object (UFO) reports that point to 60 years of UFO sightings “during times of world crisis.” According to Japan’s Kyodo News Agency and other Japanese media, there’s been hundreds and upwards of “thousands of UFO sightings” over the country since Friday’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake. Also, video footage from the news channel NHK World English and personal videos show a UFO speeding with bright lights in the sky and then skimming over the Pacific near the quake zones in Japan. The UFO sighting videos have been show on regional TV and the Internet since Friday, with the world UFO community noting “strange light trails following the UFO’s over Japan.” Moreover, a rare air defense video from Japan shows a new UFO flying over the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Regan early Monday morning, as the carrier and accompanying guided-missile cruiser and destroyer ships arrived off Japan’s coast to help with disaster response. Here at Bray’s Point – a popular location for viewing UFOs by the local Oregon “watcher” group – there’s more or less calm along the stretch of coastline that was slammed on Friday with massive Tsunami waves. Famed UFO author and “watcher” Jacqueline Estrella and her daughter Marie surveyed the Bray’s Point beach on Sunday afternoon looking for the usual Japanese fishing floats and other debris that she said “is common after a major storm.” “You look directly out across the Pacific and if you were traveling by, say any vast amount of speed, would find yourself in Japan because it directly across the sea from us. I told Marie that you wonder what our friends up in the sky are doing right now over there and here for that matter. It’s a wonder, and a great time to be alive if you believe,” Estrella added with a big grin. This story is number two in an occasional series of reports about what the secret British UFO files contain, and what new information these documents reveal. TO CONTINUE CLICK ON ABOVE LINK

I'm sorry but neither source would be considered an established mainline media source. The information is written by contributors who are not paid as best as I can tell.
If the articles were in the New York Times, the Kyodo News Agency or other professional news sites that would lend credence.

I agree MDaisy..even with the catastrophe at hand..anything like that would have made reputable news sources and I've been combing the net for anything related. Nothing. Some people will even use disasters to try to piggyback their idiocy and then try inflicting even more panic on a heartbreaking situation. like the aflac comedian who was making jokes about the quake already (fired by the way). Considering aflac is the major carrier for Japan that might not have been a wise career move. Sick fool.
